About Canoe4cancer
6In July 2011, Algonquin Adventure Tours founder, Stuart Lorne Letovsky, was diagnosed with stage 4b parotid salivary gland cancer. That guiding season was cut short so Stuart could undergo a radical parotidectomy, chemotherapy, radiation, and a half dozen other surgeries. Returning to the beauty of Algonquin Park was a constant motivator for Stuart during his treatments. One fellow chemo patient was so impressed with Stuart's photos from Algonquin Park, she suggested he publish them into a book. Reflections of Algonquin Park was published in January 2012.
By May 2012, Stuart was cancer free and back in Algonquin Park guiding canoe trips. Getting advanced cancer at age 42 really clarified how fragile and temporary life can be. It makes one realize that every day is special and should be cherished. So, Stuart made the decision to retire from classroom teaching to focus his efforts towards turning Algonquin Adventure Tours into a full time business.
In 2013, Stuart and his wife, Chinchia, invested their life savings in small organic farm in the village of Dwight. They developed some innovative day tours and started providing Algonquin Park guiding services 365 days a year.
As Algonquin Adventure Tours' gained in popularity, Stuart and Chinchia wanted to start giving back to the community. They decided that helping those with cancer was the best way to do it. So, in 2016 their Canoe4Cancer program starting proving free tours to cancer patients.
